And This Affects My Life, How?

Today’s blog is from Junior Account Coordinator Johnna Byrd. She answers an age-old question we have all asked ourselves in the past.

Remember the good ol’ college days when you were sitting in class and thinking  “When will I ever use this again?!”

I’m sure at some point everyone has had that same thought cross their minds once or twice- maybe the entire time.  I used to have those thoughts about a few of the classes I was taking, being that my major was for Business Marketing; anything that did not relate to that field, I figured was a waste of time.  I knew after college that my career pursuit was going to be in the business field.

But, due to class scheduling, trying to maintain a full class load with all the class cutbacks was no walk in the park. My solve was to take on a minor as well: Fashion Merchandising.  I considered it more like my “fun” classes rather than something that might actually pay off.  I had worked in retail clothing stores all through college and always liked fashion, so I figured what the heck?

So, while the Fashion Merchandising classes were fun, learning about fabrics and creating window displays out of nothing just really seemed like electives.  To me I just enjoyed the “craft” time; I didn’t really think anything I was learning would carry over into the business field that I was interested in pursuing…until I started at Marketing Plus!

Thank you, thank you, thank you- the words are going through my mind as I am using epoxy to glue a display case together and glitter spraying Styrofoam cut-out letters to use for props for a video shoot we were producing in our Art Box.  (Btw- we have a great space for photo and shoots! Email Stuart at stuart@marketingplus.tv for details. )

Never, did I imagine that all of those days of what I thought were just arts and crafts would actually be saving my bottom!  Those classes really gave me the outlet to be creative and little did I know then, that they would be my outlets in the marketing world.  Allowing me to use what I can relate to and transition into thinking outside the box for different projects.

Lesson learned for today- never underestimate the experiences we have in life, while we may not know it yet, they all have a purpose.
